The mild temperatures, ample food supply and protected areas are ideally suited for their wintering grounds. As part of an agreement with the US Fish & Wildlife Service, farmers leave half of the crop on the ground as food for these magnificent birds.

The Cradle of American Golf often has that type of power on golfers of all ages. But for Alli, Pinehurst isn’t just about her golf game. See Alli's entire story on my Instagram account, @PinehurstPhtographer.

Eric Ridder and his horse, Gator, together with dozens of other horses and riders gathered at the Walthour Moss Foundation in Southern Pines on New Year's day to enjoy a trail ride and the fabulous weather. The Foundation, known for its sandy equestrian trails, is home to red-cockaded woodpeckers, many other varieties of birds, deer, raccoons, opossums, red and grey foxes and rare fox squirrels. Located in the Sandhills of North Carolina, one mile from the town of Southern Pines, it occupies over 4,000 acres, virtually unspoiled by progress and development.

They come to Hyde County along the Atlantic Flyway from the Arctic tundra regions of northern Alaska and western Canada in large flocks, finding food in plowed farmer's fields and protected areas such as Lake Mattamuskeet, Pea Island and Pungo Lake, where I found them last week.

    Hunter's Moon

The full moon rises on the easterly horizon above Holden Beach, North Carolina on Sunday, October 9, 2022 just after sunset. The moon appears larger when it is viewed close to the horizon than it does high in the sky, a phenomenon called ‘moon illusion’. The dark orange color of the moon is also due to its position near the horizon. Air borne particles, more prevalent when looking at the horizon, allow orange and red wavelengths to pass through the atmosphere, while the blues get scattered.
